GMO Labels Should Not Be Mandatory

After years of opposing mandatory labeling of food products that contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms), the Campbell Soup Company recently announced its decision to switch sides in the debate. The American canned soup producer now says that not only will they voluntarily label all of their products that contain GMOs, but they will also “advocate for federal legislation that would require […]

Ghostbusting the Quantum: The New Age Misuse of Science

The so-called “New Age” is an umbrella term having reference to a body of belief which asserts that a separate holistic reality, fundamentally pervaded by a single cosmic consciousness, lies beyond the material world revealed by science. Ironically, believers in this variety of otherworldliness have claimed a connection between their spirituality and the science of quantum mechanics. As I will […]

Are Creationists Worth Debating?

Young-earth creationist and convicted tax fraudster Kent Hovind is a living testament to the fact that even paragons of ignorance can be well-spoken and capable of having a great deal of influence on people. While many well-educated and critically-thinking people may wonder just how such influence can be gained by someone who, like Hovind, has no authentic credentials whatsoever, it […]

Countering Theist Apologetics: The Argument from Design

For centuries, many theists have attempted to deduce the existence of a supernatural creator and sustainer of the universe from the visible features of the natural world. One common way they do this is by selectively pointing to instances in nature of beauty and complexity as revealed by the exploration and study of natural objects, which include examples of carefully-balanced regularity and order. The author, one Michael Egnor, titles his article “Recalling Nana’s Face: […]

The diver in question, Mike Young of Fort Smith, did not actually find any evidence corroborating his extraordinary claim that giants once lived in […]

Ray Comfort in Space

Evangelical creationist minister Ray “Banana Man” Comfort is an author and video producer who is best known for the “banana fallacy,” in which he claimed that the perfection of the banana is evidence of God’s engineering prowess in designing his creation. In putting forth this argument, Comfort was blithely unaware that it was humans who designed the Cavendish banana through […]

No Salvation for Aliens

In a shameless display of unfettered narcissism and cosmic ignorance, famous young-earth creationist Ken Ham stated in a recent blog post that even if intelligent extraterrestrials exist (which he expressly denies as a possibility), they would be damned to hell anyway. His reasoning is as follows: Since any intelligent extraterrestrial life would not be descended from Adam, caretaker of the biblical […]

On Deepak Chopra’s Absurd Challenge to Skeptics

Scientifically-informed questioners and doubters who are not easily taken in by extraordinary and unverifiable spiritual claims are clearly getting under the skin of Deepak Chopra. The man has issued a challenge to James Randi and his “so-called militant atheist friends” (whom he also refers to as Randi’s “cronies”) in a recent YouTube video. Chopra, the popular New Age guru and […]

Science Communication in Crisis (Part 2): Barriers to Science Education

In order to more effectively make areas of knowledge such as science and mathematics more accessible to the public, there is much that educators need to accomplish. Sadly, some segments of the general public do not have any interest whatsoever in science or mathematics. But if even a small portion of the American populace expresses interest in being able to […]
